PhD in Old Testament

In addition to the stated purpose of the PhD program at SEBTS, the purpose of the PhD in Old Testament is to prepare students who (1) desire to teach Old Testament or a related discipline in colleges and seminaries; (2) desire to minister as pastor-theologians in local churches; (3) desire to use their knowledge of Old Testament Studies in their ministries in global mission contexts.

Degree Program - 60 hours

PHD 9101 - Introduction to Research and Integration 3 semester hr(s).
PHD 9102 - Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education 1 semester hr(s).
OTS 9201 - Reading Seminar I 2 semester hr(s).
OTS 9202 - Reading Seminar II 2 semester hr(s).
PHD 9501 - Mentor Directed Studies I 3 semester hr(s).
PHD 9502 - Mentor Directed Studies II 3 semester hr(s).
Four (4) seminars to be chosen from the following:
OTS 9700 - Seminar in Old Testament Theology 3 semester hr(s).
OTS 9800 - Seminar in Contemporary Old Testament Research 3 semester hr(s).
HEB 9730 - Seminar in Selected Hebrew Texts from the Law semester hr(s).
HEB 9740 - Seminar in Selected Hebrew Texts from the Writings 3 semester hr(s).
HEB 9750 - Seminar in Selected Hebrew Texts from the Prophets 3 semester hr(s).
Two (2) seminars to be chosen from the following:
BBG 9600 - Seminar in Ancient Jewish & Greco-Roman Literature 3 semester hr(s).
BBG 9800 - Seminar in Biblical Historiography semester hr(s).
BTI 9600 - Seminar in Biblical Hermeneutics 3 semester hr(s).
BTI 9700 - Seminar in Biblical Theology 3 semester hr(s).
BTI 9800 - Seminar in the History of Biblical Interpretation 3 semester hr(s).
Two (2) seminars are free electives to be selected in consultation with the major professor.
Students must demonstrate competency in two research languages.

PHD 9800 - Written & Oral Comprehensive Exams 4 semester hr(s).
PHD 9850 - PHD Prospectus 1 semester hr(s).
Students must register for at least 16 hrs of Ph.D. Dissertation.
PHD 9900 - PHD Dissertation 4 semester hr(s).
PHD 9950 - PHD Dissertation Defense 1 semester hr(s).
