Church Music Certificate

Southeastern’s Church Music Certificate is a 21-hour program of study for those who serve in local churches in the areas of music and worship and who have not attained an undergraduate music degree.

This program combines online, on-campus, and hybrid courses to develop musical skills and teach theological and practical content related to music in the church. The program is designed to be flexible enough to accommodate the schedule of working students as well as those with family responsibilities. Courses from the program can transfer into the Bachelor of Arts in Christian Studies and Music Major or Music Minor undergraduate degree programs at The College at Southeastern.

There are no prerequisites for admission to the Church Music Certificate program. However, incoming students may be asked to take a placement test in music theory.

Degree Requirements

Structure of Music (6 credit hours from the following, in proper sequence)

MUS 0010 - Introduction to Basic Musicianship 2 semester hr(s).
MUS 1501 - Basic Musicianship I 2 semester hr(s).
MUS 1502 - Sightsinging Lab I 1 semester hr(s).
MUS 1503 - Basic Musicianship II 2 semester hr(s).
MUS 1504 - Sightsinging Lab II 1 semester hr(s).

Applied Study Skills (6 credits from the following, including at least 2 credits each in keyboard and vocal skills)

MUS 1534 - Piano Class 1 semester hr(s).
MUS 1530 - Voice Class for Non-Music Majors 2 semester hr(s).
MUS 1531 - Voice Class for Music Majors 2 semester hr(s).
MUS 2640 - Private Study - Voice 1 semester hr(s). *
MUS 2642 - Private Study - Piano 1 semester hr(s). *
MUS 2644 - Private Study - Orchestral Instrument 1 semester hr(s). *
MUS 2646 - Private Study - Organ 1 semester hr(s). *
MUS 2647 - Private Study - Guitar 1 semester hr(s). *

Conducting - 2 Hours

MUS 3520 - Fundamentals of Conducting 2 semester hr(s).

Worship Studies - 3 Hours

MIN 3540 - The Ministry of Worship 3 semester hr(s).
